How stress can be the main cause of yeast overgrowth and inflammation in the body

You can eat the cleanest diet ever and still get gut infections, inflammation, and yeast overgrowth. How? Elevated stress levels can cause yeast overgrowth.
When you’re stressed, your body releases more of a hormone called Cortisol. This hormone can weaken the immune system, and at the same time, cause elevated levels of blood sugar. Since yeast feeds off sugar, it can grow much quicker than normal.

Our brains are connected to our gut, where everything lies. So regardless of our diet, it does no good if we’re stressed. I personally believe that we can eliminate yeast overgrowth just by de-stressing…why? Because my diet pretty much stays the same if I’m on a “yeast cleanse” or not.

If you want to kick a yeast overgrowth QUICK, here’s what you need to do and why.

1) Most important: De-stress!

2) Go on a low carb diet for 4 days and consume mainly:

•Proteins like: lean chicken, grass-fed beef, and fish (avoid all processed meats like deli meats, etc.)
•Veggies like: spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, butternut squash, zucchini
•A lot of fats like: avocado, coconut oil, almond butter, and flaxseed oil
•Cranberries: they’re low sugar, low carb, and contain yeast fighting properties (be sure they’re either fresh or frozen, avoid canned).
•Plain Greek Yogurt: lots and lots of yogurt! One of the best things to consume as it has tons of probiotics, full of protein, and is soothing to the tummy. It is best if it’s full fat, as it’s less processed and contains less sugars (fat free contains more sugars since the fat is extracted and thus, more sugars take the fats place.
•Bone broth: such a healing superfood all around!
•L-Glutamine: This helps fight against bad gut flora and keep the epithelial cells from dying.
•Olive leaf tea: I have an entire post about the benefits as well as how to boil them, for more information click here.

Foods to Avoid When on a Yeast Cleanse:

•High sugar fruits like: ripe bananas, dates, grapes, mango, pineapple and all dried fruits as dried are more concentrated in sugars. 1/2 cup berries, papaya, and green bananas are ok once per day.
•Coffee: instead drink herbal tea and A LOT of water with fresh lemon juice.
•Fermented foods like: kombucha and krouts. These can actually make yeast overgrowth worse.
•All packaged/processed foods. Everything you consume should be fresh. If it comes in a bag, box, wrapper, or can…throw it out!
•Peanuts, stevia, and pork. I avoid these 3 things all together (not just on a “yeast cleanse”). Why? These three (peanut poststevia postpork post) posts explain why. Take a look.
•Antibiotics: they can actually makes things worse and cause additional health issues like UTIs and other infections in the body.

Here’s a delicious candida diet compliant recipe you can consume when on a yeast cleanse.

4-Ingredient Paleo Pound Cake

4 eggs
1 tsp baking powder
1 cup smooth almond butter
1/3 cup unsweetened cacao powder
*2 Tbsp honey (see note below)

1. Beat eggs and baking powder with an electric/stand mixer until eggs fluff.
2. Add almond butter and cacao powder and continue beating until a thick, sticky batter forms.
3. Line a standard bread loaf pan with parchment paper and bake at 350 F for 30-40 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

*I personally did not add honey as I prefer without, however if you are used to sweet things then you may want to add 1-2 Tbsp honey. For keto, candida, & diabetic diets best to leave out.
