6 habits to add to your routine for a healthier you

New Year, New Wellness Habits:

With the New Year quickly approaching, you may be thinking about how you can update your wellness routine for a healthier, happier you in 2017. It seems like every year there are new health trends that come out, and while some come and go, the truly beneficial ones stick around because they make a lasting impression on us and our health. So what wellness trends should you be focusing on for 2017?

Below are my favorite health trends that are worth adding to your wellness routine this upcoming year.

Adding medicinal mushroom powders to your drinks/meals:

Medicinal mushrooms are my absolute favorite of health powders to incorporate into my daily routine. They are great for your immune system, full of antioxidants, help you handle stress, are anti-inflammatory, and can protect your body against harmful bacteria. Health benefits will vary based on which mushroom varietal you choose, so choose ones that meet your own health needs. My favorite mushrooms are reishi, cordyceps, and chaga. They can be added to everything from your morning oats, smoothies, and elxiris to your tea, coffee, and more. My absolute favorite medicinal mushroom brand is Om Mushrooms.

Using a mediation app:

I wanted to adopt meditation into my daily holistic lifestyle for years, but could never stick to it, until I found the app Headspace. It is a super easy to use app full of guided and unguided meditations that make it almost effortless to incorporate this spiritual practice into your life on a daily basis. They first make you go through a series of 30 meditations and you can even set daily reminders, which really helps to make it a habit you stick to daily. I’ve been using the app for 6 months and now meditate 1-2 times daily. Plus with the vast benefits of meditation, isn’t it time you start adding this practice into your own life? Besides reducing stress and anxiety, meditation improves mood, helps you think more clearly, decreases inflammation (the root cause of most diseases), lowers blood pressure, can decrease your chances of Alzheimer’s, and even increases grey matter in your brain, the area involved with learning, memory, having a sense of self, and regulating emotions.

Listening to one new podcast weekly:

Instead of turning on the TV at night, or listening to the radio in your car, why not tune into a podcast? There are tons of educational podcasts out there to help you learn about a subject you have grown interested in, whether it is health-related, or something else that speaks to you. Podcasts are a great way to learn something new, while benefiting your brain and spending less time doing unhealthy activities such as watching television. Why not let 2017 be a year of learning and growth!? One of my favorite health-focused podcasts to listen to is Dave Asprey’s Bulletproof podcast.

Regularly trying a new workout activity:

Sometimes we get stuck in our same old routines and end up growing restless, or even plateauing because our body has grown used to the repetitive movements. Let this be the year you discover new workouts and challenge your body in new ways. Aim to try a new workout class bi-weekly, or even weekly. You can invest in a Class Pass which allows you to try a range of different workout classes in your area to find ones that you truly love. Commit to challenging your body in news ways this year! Your brain and muscles will both thank you.

Focusing on mindful eating:

Mindfully eating allows you to appreciate your food more, digest it better, and be more aware of when you become full, so you don’t overeat. To practice this, take a few deep breaths before enjoying a meal and take note of your meal: The colors, the smell, and how it looks. You may want to bless or thank your meal before beginning to eat it. Next, focus on thoroughly chewing your food. A good rule of thumb to follow is to chew your food 20 times (yes 20!) before swallowing it. We are so often rushed to eat our food and do it without even thinking, but tuning into this practice will allow for many health benefits. I’ve been doing this for the past year, and notice a huge difference in my digestion and my own body awareness. I do slip up sometimes, and also notice the difference when I don’t mindfully eat. It is worth practicing in 2017.

Dedicating one day a week to some self-love:

Choose one day a week where you dedicate some extra time to practicing self-love. This may include doing something you truly enjoy (like going hiking, to the Farmer’s Market, or painting), taking a relaxing bubble bath, or even something more indulgent like getting a massage. You should also make sure you are practicing self-love daily with such practices as writing down three things you love about yourself, journaling, or working on replacing any negative thoughts about yourself that start to arise with positive ones. One of my favorite self-love practices to do is to randomly buy flowers for myself. This practice should be just as important as your workout and eating habits, so dedicate 2017 to being the year of more self-love.

Starting or ending your day with a nutrient dense elixir:

Ditch the morning coffee or nightly tea, and instead mix some of your favorite medicinal powders, teas, spices, and herbs together to begin or end your day with a magical and nourishing potion. Elixirs are a great way to get a variety of nutrients into your cup and body. Discover my favorite Golden Milk Elixir recipe below and try having this a few times a week in place of your regular coffee or tea.

Golden Milk Elixir

This will fight inflammation in your body, help you to focus and provide you with magical energy

Ingredients (Use organic whenever possible)

8-10 oz. organic coconut milk
2 tsp. turmeric (plus dash of black pepper for better absorption)
1 tsp. of each: Cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger
1 tbsp. MCT oil
1 tsp. grass-fed organic vanilla ghee
1 tsp. Moon Juice Power Dust
1 tsp. OM Lion’s Mane mushroom powder

Warm the organic coconut milk (low heat and stir occasionally) until desired temperature is reached
Add turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger to teacup
Next add MCT oil, honey, Power dust, and mushroom powder
Once the coconut milk is comfortably hot, pour into cup and mix well
Taste and adjust any flavors needed
Top with cinnamon and enjoy this golden treat in the morning

Choose 1-2 of your favorites from here to get started. Sometimes baby steps are far better than taking large steps, so go slow, so you don’t overwhelm yourself. These are meant to all be good for your well-being, so you should ENJOY doing them. They shouldn’t be things that you dread doing. Pay attention to how you start to feel after a month of trying some of these wellness habits. Start a few of these now, so by the time the clock strikes midnight, you are already well on your way to a healthier 2017.

Cheers to your health and well-being this New Year’s, you absolutely deserve it!
